Headshot Day is coming up, and one of the most common questions I get is: “What should I wear?”
The good news is that styling for a professional headshot doesn’t have to be complicated. The goal is simple: look polished, confident, and like the best version of yourself. Your clothing should support that—not distract from it.
Here are a few easy tips to help you feel prepared when you walk into the studio.
Choose Solid Colors Over Busy Patterns
Solid colors almost always photograph best. Patterns can be distracting and sometimes create strange effects on camera, especially in professional headshots.
Classic, flattering options include:
Navy
Cream
Black
Soft blush/pink
Deep green
Light blue
Necklines Matter More Than You Think
For headshots, the neckline of your top is surprisingly important because it frames your face.
Some of my favorites:
V-necks
Soft scoop necks
Structured blouses
Blazers layered over a simple top
These styles create clean lines and photograph beautifully. Avoid anything too high and tight around the neck, which can sometimes feel restrictive on camera.
If you want a slightly more polished or professional look, layers are your best friend.
Think:
A tailored blazer
A structured cardigan
A lightweight jacket
Layers add dimension to your photos and give us a couple of quick looks during your session.
Jewelry should complement your look, not overpower it.
Great options include:
Simple gold or silver hoops
Small studs
A delicate necklace
*One of the quickest things that can date your look is jewelry. So think "timeless" not "trendy."
If you wear glasses regularly, bring them! Just make sure the lenses are clean.
You don’t need to completely reinvent yourself for headshots. In fact, the best headshots happen when you look like your everyday professional self, just a little more polished.
A few quick tips:
Smooth flyaways
Add a touch more makeup than you normally would (camera softens it)
Bring a lip gloss or powder for quick touch-ups
If you’re unsure about your outfit, bring a second option. We can quickly decide together what will photograph best once you arrive.
Sometimes the difference between a good headshot and a great one is simply choosing the top that frames your face perfectly under the studio lights.
Confidence.
I’ll guide you through posing, expressions, and angles so you feel comfortable and natural in front of the camera. My goal is always to create headshots that feel professional, approachable, and authentically you.
I can’t wait to see you for your heaadshots!
xoxo,
Tracy
